Editing drone shots so they match the rest of the set

Aerial images have become standard for anything with land, a view, or a location worth showing. They are also the images most often edited separately from the rest of a listing, which is why they so frequently fail to match it.
Haze. Shooting through a hundred feet or more of atmosphere reduces contrast and adds a blue-grey veil, worse over distance and in humid conditions. Distant hills and coastlines flatten into pale shapes.
Sensor limits. Drone sensors are small relative to a full-frame camera. They hold less dynamic range and produce more noise in anything other than good light, which matters when a bright sky sits above a shaded roof.
Wide lens distortion. Most drone lenses are very wide and bend horizons noticeably, particularly when the camera is angled.
Enormous sky area. Aerials often contain far more sky than a ground level shot, so a poor sky dominates the frame.
Time gaps. Aerials are frequently shot at a different moment from the interiors, sometimes on a different day, so the light does not match the rest of the set.
Haze reduction is the first correction most aerials need and the easiest to overdo. Pushed hard, it produces dark, over-contrasted landscapes with unnatural colour separation and heavy noise in the sky.
The target is what a person would see on a clear day from that height: distant objects still slightly softer and lighter than close ones, because that is how atmosphere genuinely behaves. Removing the depth cue entirely makes the image look flat and synthetic even though it is technically clearer.
A curved horizon is the fastest way to make an aerial look amateur. Lens correction plus a level adjustment usually fixes it, and both should be applied before anything else so the composition is settled.
Verticals matter in aerials too, though differently. In a shot angled down at a house, the building's walls converge naturally and that is correct. In a more horizontal shot, buildings should stand straight. The rule is the same as at ground level: correct until it reads naturally, then stop, using the approach in keeping verticals honest.
This is where aerials most often break a listing. The drone frames get one sky, the ground level exteriors get another, and the two sit next to each other on the portal looking like different days.
Whatever sky treatment the set uses should apply across all exteriors, aerial and ground, matched for direction, colour and character. If the ground exteriors keep their original sky, aerials should too. If they are replaced, the replacements must agree with each other and with the light on the property. Aerials make this harder because the sky occupies more of the frame and because the light direction is easier to read from above, where roof shadows are clearly visible.
A drone and a camera render colour differently, and their files edited independently will not match. Grass photographs differently from above, roofs pick up sky colour, and drone processing often applies its own contrast profile.
The fix is to treat the whole listing as one unit, establishing the treatment on the main images and then bringing the aerials into line with it, rather than editing them as a separate job. The set-level approach is in keeping photo editing consistent at volume.
Green is the usual culprit. A lawn edited to look right from ground level and a lawn edited to look right from above can end up visibly different, and buyers scrolling will notice.
An aerial exists to communicate things the ground shots cannot: the plot's extent and shape, the relationship to neighbouring properties, the setting, outbuildings, and access.
That purpose creates an honesty obligation. An aerial angled or cropped to conceal an adjacent industrial building, a busy road, or the true proximity of neighbours is misleading in a way that ground level photography rarely manages, because buyers specifically use aerials to understand context.
Removing permanent features from an aerial is squarely over the line discussed in object removal and MLS rules. Temporary items, such as cars in a driveway or bins on collection day, remain fair to remove.
A common request is to overlay a plot boundary on an aerial. This is useful for land, rural properties and anything where the extent is not obvious.
Two cautions. The line must be accurate, drawn from a title plan rather than estimated from what looks like a fence, since an inaccurate boundary line on marketing material is a genuine problem. And it should be clearly a graphic overlay rather than something that could be mistaken for a physical feature.
Small sensors produce noise, particularly in skies and shadows, and particularly in the low light that makes aerials most attractive. Noise reduction needs the same restraint as everything else: enough to clean the sky, not so much that roof tiles and foliage turn to plastic. The approach is the same as for dark interiors, covered in noise in low light interiors.
Send them with the rest of the listing rather than as a separate job, and say which ground level exterior they should match. If they were shot on a different day or in different light, say so, because that is exactly the context an editor cannot infer from the files.
